Ethylene, a natural plant hormone, stimulates the ripening of fruits and vegetables and the opening and senescence of flowers. All plants have receptors which bind to ethylene.
For more than a decade, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) has been used to block ethylene receptor sites on apples to inhibit the ripening process, enabling the shelf life of apples to be significantly extended. 1-MCP is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and designated as Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Until recently, the application has been limited to air-tight containers. However, Cellresin has proven, patented technology that expands the safe application for use in packaging with many other fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Cellresin’s 1-MCP packaging technology is compatible with traditional packaging, shipping and distribution channels. The technology is a scale neutral approach that allows a granular deployment of non-disruptive 1-MCP technology and avoids all the capital investment in storage rooms.
